Productivity of Long Shifts
Productivity of Long Shifts
Questions:
We are thinking of switching to a 12 hour shift with a rotation of 2-2-3 day schedule, could you please tell me about any pros and cons of this type of schedule that you may have encountered. Please share any details you have on altered productivity you have observed. Should you have any additional thoughts on this please feel free to share.
Answers:
While I cannot weigh in on the exact shift I discussion, we as a manufacturing organization when we were too busy with too few trained machine operators tried to have people work 11 hour shifts. No matter how busy we get, we will not try this again (I hope)...productivity at the end of the shifts decreased, quality issues increased, and we had a dramatic rise in safety incidents (ergonomic issues mostly)...We were working operators 55-60 hour weeks. It was too much...I just would suggest careful consideration be given to quality issues and safety issues - fatigue could be a serious factor to consider.

We have worked this shift rotation for several years. I am happy to speak with the individual asking the question. That is easier than writing everything!
