The Issue:
The world may be flat, but successful workforce development in the 21st century must clearly be multi-dimensional. It has become increasingly clear in this era of global competition that a strong workforce requires more than a reincarnation of the employment and training models of yesterday. The ability to develop, attract and retain talent is the vision of the Journey To Jobs (J2J) Initiative, of which MACNY is an integral partner. In order to focus on genuine talent development that drives innovation and capital investment, the J2J initiative will focus on the creation of systemic changes capitalizing on the strengths of existing infrastructure, promoting necessary investment, and developing and maintaining human talent, leading to growth of both a dynamic economic base and a vibrant, creative culture throughout our region. Believing that talent drives economic vitality, the J2J Team is focused on achieving three goals: energize the workforce; improve education and training; and create connections.
Funding for the J2J Initiative and other workforce development programs will be critical to maintaining Central New York’s economic vitality.
In Albany:
MACNY will lobby for increases in the resources for:
• Developing entrepreneurship supports.
• Creating and expanding a continuum of education and training for new and incumbent workers.
• Worker credentialing.
• Employer training to increase business capacity.
• Literacy contextualized to work and life skills.
• Promoting and expanding internships/mentoring/job shadowing experiences.
• Aligning and leveraging regional capacity through replication and assessment.
• Promoting regional awareness of the identified economic drivers and related career pathways within and outside the region.
