Two Quick Ways to Gain Traction on Your Goals Today
David Freund, Chief Leadership Officer
Have you ever struggled with achieving your goals? If your answer is no, we need to talk, but my guess is that your answer is yes. I have had goals that I can easily keep on track and others that seem to be like walking through mud—each step is a challenge and I never seem to get very far. In the past, I have attributed this to not really wanting it bad enough or not prioritizing it enough, but lately, I am thinking I may just need some new tools in my toolbox. After doing some additional learning, here are two tools that I am starting to implement in my own life:
Habit Goals – Think about the things that you do every day without thinking about it. When you wake up and brush your teeth, you do it without even thinking. When you get dressed you most likely put your clothes on the same way every day. When you drive to work, you probably drive the same route at exactly the same time every single day. You live out these habits and routines without thinking. Just imagine if you could form a similar habit that would help you accomplish a goal. The key to habit-based goals is to identify actions that would move you in the direction of your goals on a daily basis. The next step with habit goals is to develop a daily way to track your success.
Time Triggers – Let’s use the example of brushing your teeth, my guess is that you do it the same time each day. You have a habit of getting out of bed, washing your face, and brushing your teeth. The time trigger is that the habit occurs when you get out of bed. I bet if you ever forgot to brush your teeth, it was because your morning routine was interrupted. Had the interruption not occurred, you wouldn’t have forgotten. The key here is to find a time trigger that allows your habit to occur without needing to remember, just like brushing your teeth.
Why not give Habit Goals and Time Triggers a try. If you would like more information on how you can use these two great tools, please join Marisa Norcross and me for Episode 130 of The Next Page podcast as we take a closer look at how these tools can be applied.
