Where Are The Leaders?
David Freund, Chief Leadership Officer
If you were to ask me what the greatest challenge facing our country and the world at large is, I would have to say a leadership vacuum. Now I know what you will say; what about global conflicts, diseases, or world hunger. Those are huge challenges, don’t get me wrong, but without leaders who will rally the troops to the cause, there’s little hope of addressing them in any meaningful way.
At our last Live2Lead event, Marcus Buckingham reminded us that leaders are what count and leaders have followers—not leadership. We can’t tell a person to go get more leadership. We can tell them to go and learn how to be a leader.
So, how can we find our new leaders? In his newest book, The Leader’s Greatest Return, John Maxwell shares wonderful insights into finding and developing leaders, which really is the leader’s greatest return. Here are just a few tips:
- Good leaders want more for their people than they want from them. We need to find people with a servant mindset. People who believe in lifting others up rather than tearing them down and getting whatever they can from them.
- Good leaders have the gift of connection and can inspire others. They have abilities that can be drawn out and developed.
- Good leaders have a track record of accomplishing things. They don’t wait for others to jump in first, they jump into a task and motivate others to follow them.
The leaders we need are already here; we just need to help them discover their giftedness and grow into their roles.
