Ready, Get Set…
David Freund, Chief Leadership Officer
We are just about ready to start 2022. Time waits for no one, so we better be ready and get set to start strong. Let’s take a look at four things you will need to keep in mind as you enter the new year.
Know Your Destination – I know this sounds obvious, but you need to know where you want your team to go in 2022. I recently had a conversation with a leader who is making big changes in 2022, and I don’t get the sense that they have a plan. Make sure you have done the hard work of determining the tactical moves needed to achieve your mission and vision.
Craft Your Communications – Communication is an art, and you get to be the artist. Walk slowly through the crowd and learn where they are on the journey. Once you have an idea of where your team is, craft the conversations for those who are listening. Think about what they need to hear, not what you want to say. Remember, it needs to be about them and how they fit into the plan.
Get Moving – Until you get moving, you don’t really know how your plan is doing. As you progress forward, you will gain more clarity around the plan. You will be able to see what is working and what isn’t working. One of my mentors put it best when he identified a six-step process for moving forward.
- Plan
- Enter
- Fail
- Learn
- Adjust
- Re-enter
Develop Continually – As you begin to work your plan, keep looking for opportunities to develop your team. Your team will be stretching, and training opportunities will be everywhere. Look for the opportunities between steps three and four. These opportunities will come via the classroom, mentoring, coaching, and delegation. You and your team need to learn that failure really can be your friend.
