We are making big advances in solar for residential. This successful installation was announced about a year ago. As attractive as it is (at least in my opinion) there are some less obvious challenges that I learned about quite by accident. Unlike conventional roofing materials, this PV system (PV: Photo Voltaic) cannot be ‘field modified’ to accommodate structural lines and it does look different enough that mixing it with traditional roofing to work around those edges, skylights, chimneys, etc does not exactly blend. For now at least, the PV roof has to be designed precisely. I am confident there is a solution out there.
