Featured class of the month: The Metallurgy of Joining Processes
In this course joining processes include welding, brazing, soldering, and certain additive manufacturing of metal parts (e.g. direct metal laser printing). While these processes are unique, they are similar in that they involve melting and solidification of one or more metals/metal alloys. In each process, a bond is created between two metals or metal alloys. Our focus will be on what happens to the metal during melting and subsequent solidification, and the impact on chemistry and properties of the final product.
The goal of this course is to understand the fundamentals of what happens to the metal during the joining process.
A minimum of high school chemistry and math or equivalent is required.
Topics Covered
- Fundamentals of thermodynamics & chemical reactions
- Ellingham diagrams and liquid metal reactions
- Chemical interactions between gases and liquid metal
- Diffusion in metals
- Solidification basics
This course meets five times:
