We Need Congress To Act Now And Invest In Manufacturing
Randy Wolken, President & CEO
The America COMPETES Act was recently introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives. This federal legislation includes many components of the overwhelmingly bipartisan U.S. Innovation and Competition Act passed in the U.S. Senate last year. It represents a significant step forward. Although we know this legislation has elements that we do not fully support, we believe it can be improved before it returns to the Senate. When our representatives work to pass this legislation, they support the future of manufacturing in America. Its provisions can help address inflation and alleviate supply chain challenges. It also could bolster our national and economic security by providing significant investment in U.S. semiconductor manufacturing. This bill also includes funding for a Supply Chain Resilience and Crisis Response Office at the Department of Commerce. These elements grow our economy, strengthen our national security, and make us more resilient during future global crises.
Now is the time to invest in our high-tech industries located here in New York State and the rest of our country. Extended supply chains, delays in deliveries, and dependence on nations that do not share our commitment to democracy will continue without our fierce determination to be in control of our destiny. China and Russia pose real threats to our future. But we can create a better, more inclusive, and more sustainable supply chains within manufacturing with other like-minded nations. We must not miss this moment.
Additionally, high-end semiconductor chip production here in the U.S. is essential. Today, 80% of the world’s high-end chip manufacturing is in Taiwan and within 90 miles of China. These are the chips in every vehicle we drive today. They are necessary for the tanks, ships, and aircrafts that defend our way of life. Therefore, we can no longer entrust our national and economic security to a strategy that trusts the Chinese not to invade Taiwan, which they claim publicly is a part of China.
I am asking you to use our convenient, web-based tool to reach out to your representatives at all levels to encourage them to support manufacturing. MACNY offers i360 as a way to quickly and effectively communicate your needs with our elected officials. Click here to support The America COMPETES Act of 2022. Together we will continue to raise our voices in support of critical policy needs for manufacturers. Our representatives need to hear directly from you – their job creators and constituents. When they hear from you, they are more likely to listen and act on behalf of manufacturing.
And finally, thank you for all you do to strengthen our local and national economy each day. It is our honor at MACNY to advocate on behalf of our members and the entire manufacturing sector of New York State.
